Liberty University School of Law Dean Dr. Timothy Todd received the 2024 Best Research Award from the Financial Planning Association for his contributions to advancing financial planning practitioners and the profession.
He received the award with University of Georgia Professor Dr. Kristy L. Archuleta. The two presented their research in progress titled “Let’s Talk About Financial Stress and Anxiety: Is There a Difference?” at the FPA’s annual conference in Columbus, Ohio, in September. Financial stress and financial anxiety are key components to the psychological aspects of financial planning, and Todd and Archuleta are working on new conceptual frameworks to delineate the two constructs.
“Along with my co-author, I’m honored to have received this year’s award,” Todd said. “Given the ubiquity of financial stress and anxiety, we’re excited to further this contribution to the research and practitioner communities. We hope that our work will help inform conversations on some of the most stressful aspects of life, which are money matters.”
Todd received the award in 2023 along with his co-authors for their research in progress titled “Evaluating the Impact of Emergency Savings on Mental, Behavioral, and Future Goal Outcomes.” Todd serves on the FPA Board of Directors.
Todd’s research also earned the 2024 Association for Financial Counseling & Planning Education Symposium Research Paper Award along with his co-authors for their project, “Gambling Behavior and Cryptocurrency Investment: A Treatment-Effect Analysis.” The paper was accepted for publication in the “Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning.”
Todd has published extensively, contributing to both academic and professional journals, and recently released a book with Aspen Publishing titled “Examples and Explanations for Partnership Taxation” as part of a well-known and popular law school series. His areas of teaching and interest include taxation, financial planning, wills, trusts, estates, estate planning, and business planning.
Todd holds a Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Kansas State University, M.S. in Applied Economics from Johns Hopkins University, Juris Doctor from Liberty University School of Law, and an M.S. in Accounting and B.S. in Business from Liberty. He served as associate dean for academic affairs at Liberty Law (2016-20), associate dean for faculty development and scholarship (2020-24), and interim dean (2024) before becoming dean of Liberty Law in January.
